However, with great power comes great responsibility, or in this case, the responsibility of proper placement. This article explores the implementation of liquid metal cooling within the PS5 and why keeping your console ‘flat’ in a horizontal orientation may be the preferred choice for maximizing your console’s lifespan.
The Power of Liquid Metal
Traditional thermal paste acts as a bridge between the processor and the heatsink, transferring heat away from the core. The PS5, however, takes a different approach, utilizing liquid metal for superior heat dissipation. This special alloy boasts a much higher thermal conductivity than traditional paste, allowing the PS5 to efficiently cool its powerful components.
Should I keep my PS5 standing upright?
While the PS5 is designed to function in both horizontal and vertical orientations, there have been widespread concerns about the long-term effects of vertical placement on the liquid metal cooling system. The primary concern lies in the potential for the liquid metal to pool or migrate within the heatsink over extended periods.
Imagine a small puddle of liquid metal inside the console. In a horizontal position, the puddle is unlikely to cause any issues. However, in a vertical orientation, gravity could theoretically pull the liquid metal towards the bottom of the heatsink, potentially causing it to pool unevenly. While the exact impact of this pooling is still under investigation, some experts theorize that it could lead to:
- Reduced Cooling Efficiency: An uneven distribution of liquid metal could lead to less effective heat transfer from the processor to the heatsink. This, in turn, could cause the PS5 to run hotter, potentially impacting performance and increasing fan noise.
- Liquid Metal Leaks: In a worst-case scenario, a significant pool of liquid metal could leak from the heatsink and come into contact with other sensitive components within the console. This could lead to permanent damage and require costly repairs.
It’s Important to Note
- Sony’s Official Stance: It’s important to acknowledge that Sony, the manufacturer of the PS5, officially supports both horizontal and vertical placement of the console.
- Limited Evidence: While the potential risks mentioned above could be possible, there’s currently no evidence of widespread issues arising directly from using the PS5 vertically and many users have reported using their consoles vertically for extended periods without encountering any problems.
Our Experience With PS5 Liquid Metal
Despite the relatively small number of consoles that seem to exhibit this behaviour, (as gamers and console repair techs) we suggest erring on the side of caution. We have personally seen (previously untouched – i.e. never opened for service) PS5s that have come in for service with noticeable pooling of liquid metal towards the ‘bottom’ of the APU core, on units that have been used in an upright position.
Although we have not personally encountered any severe enough to have leaked out of the liquid metal containment foam/tape, we have seen photographic and video evidence from console repair shops both here and abroad. (see the photo attached to this post) Of course there may be the possibility that those most severely affected may have been dropped or knocked during shipping or sometime during its ownership. Also, there may be the chance that these units were previously worked on and did not seal properly upon re-assembly of the console.
Here are some recommendations
- Prioritise Horizontal Placement: If you have the space, consider keeping your PS5 horizontal. This minimizes the potential for possible liquid metal pooling.
- Ensure Proper Ventilation: Regardless of orientation, make sure your PS5 has ample ventilation. Avoid placing it in enclosed spaces or directly next to heat sources.
- Monitor Performance: Keep an ear out for any unusual fan noise, which could indicate overheating. If you notice any performance issues, consider switching to a horizontal position.
- Regular Cleaning: Dust build-up can also impact cooling efficiency. Regularly clean the vents of your PS5 following the manufacturer’s instructions.
The Bottom Line
The decision of whether to place your PS5 horizontally or vertically ultimately boils down to personal preference and available space. While concerns about liquid metal pooling during extended vertical use, are quite hotly debated online, we are definitely in the camp of ‘better safe than sorry‘ and will continue to recommend horizontal placement. Ultimately, the most important thing is to ensure your PS5 has proper ventilation and remains cool during operation.
